What Steps Should You Take If A Car Window Is Broken Out?

The holiday season is here. For many people, that means going from store to store in search of the perfect gift. Thieves are out and about as well, and unfortunately, if they see your gifts sitting unattended in your car, they may be willing to break out your car window to get their hands on your goodies. When this happens, you may be unsure of what steps you should take. Here are a few of the steps you should take if your car window has been broken out.

Clean Up the Glass

If your car window has been broken, the first thing you will want to do is clean up the glass. When someone breaks the window from the outside, the glass will shatter inside your car. It can travel far and become embedded in the nooks and crannies in your car. Start by removing large shards of glass by hand, then use a shop vacuum to suck away the leftover glass. Be sure to take your time and vacuum multiple times to ensure all of the glass is gone.

Wipe Down the Interior Door Area

Once you have removed the broken glass, take the time to wipe down the interior door area inside your car with your preferred car interior cleaner. Not only will this wipe away any leftover glass fragments, but it will also help the tape to stick when you move on to the next step.

Seal Off the Empty Window

Now that the glass is removed and your interior is clean, you can seal off the empty window to decrease the chances of pests and moisture getting in your car. Sit inside your car and position a tarp or garbage bag over the open window. Use masking tape to hold the tarp or bag in place. If desired, you can repeat the process on the exterior of the car as well. However, instead of adhering the new bag or tarp to the body of your vehicle, try to stick it to the bag or tarp already in place inside your car. The tape residue can damage the paint on your car.

Make an Appointment With an Auto Glass Replacement Company

You have now done everything that you can do on your own. The next step is to call a professional to replace your car's auto glass for you.

If your car window has been broken out, you will want to have the window replaced as quickly as possible. Rain and bugs can enter your car without a window in place, and your line of vision while driving can be impeded if you cover the gaping hole left behind with a garbage bag or tarp. If your vehicle window has been broken, schedule an appointment with an auto glass replacement company as quickly as possible so they can order the glass you need and install the new glass in your vehicle.
